The unprecedented change in the technology during the recent past has compelled Government of India to create necessary infrastructure facilities to cope up with the globalization and liberalization of the economy. To achieve this goal ‘Quality’ becomes watch word for each modern industry. Human Resource Development and the need of training of each individual whether at the top or bottom level in the establishment can not be ignored. For effective training, the necessary training materials must be developed. In this context, Ministry of Labour, Government of India with foresight contemplated during early 80s to develop standard validated training materials(Instructional Media Packages). This has resulted in the establishment of National Instructional Media Institute (NIMI).

 
Objectives of NIMI
a)

Compile and assess teaching materials and aids available in India, select suitable materials from amongst them and adopt them for immediate use, wherever possible.

b)

Develop complete media packages which will include Trade theory, Trade Practical, Assignments, Instructors Guide, Audio – visual aids and other supporting materials, so as to train craftsman and apprentices.

c)

Provide in-service training for instructors in the selection, use, development and validation of instructional materials.

d)

Establish a resource center where all learning materials available and produced in India will be stored for use in training activities all over the country.

e)

Organise seminars and workshops for the training managers, developers and users.

f)

To provide better understanding of the mechanics of capabilities and instructional potentials of the staff engaged in the vocational Training system.

g)

To enhance the overall productivity of the learning process through the introduction of appropriate and validated instructional media. To follow the system approach in the area of vocational training which includes instructor training.

h)

To provide necessary facilities and guidance in the design, development, production use and validation of learning packages.

i)

To supply validated learning packages in theory, shop practice, applied science and calculations, and engineering drawings, in specific fields of Vocational training, to publishers for commercial production and publication.

j)

To develop question bank for trades under CTS/ATS and to modernize / update test and testing procedure under CTS/ATS.

k)

To support translation of NIMI-IMPs into regional languages.
